This & this is why i think virtually free public health care is not sustainable. If the patient/their family has to pay, they would seriously consider the costs vs benefits of "doing everything possible". Defensive medicine (or maybe monetary medicine) is driving medical practise towards this direction. And some relatives I've met, have "pressured" doctors to do "doing everything possible", even if it is futile, just because it's free.
